Run for the Cure

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I confess to having mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, every month should be breast cancer awareness month. Do those self-checks monthly, girls!

Those of us who’ve lost a friend or relative to cancer — not just breast cancer — do we think about them only in October? No. They’re with us every week, every day, every hour.

And then there are all the retailers that jump on the “awareness” bandwagon as a means of marketing their merchandise, pink and decorated with the ubiquitous “For the Cure” ribbon. Yes, a portion of sales goes to the Susan Komen Foundation. But it is typically a small percentage or less than $1 per item. It would be much more efficient and generous of all parties involved (merchant, consumer) to simply write a check.

But on the other hand, if a Breast Cancer Awareness month is what it takes for us all to rally behind charities and support finding a cure, or sign up for that first 5k Race for the Cure® that will spark a life-long love of running, then so be it! There are 146 of those races happening all over the world, from Albany, NY (this Saturday, October 6) to Naples, Italy (on Sunday, October 7), check them out!

And you know what? I will write that check, but as soon as the temperatures here go below 90s, I will also don my this pretty li’l thing from New Balance.

Seeing how I was in the market for a sleeveless vest for fall, I will think of the 5%, or roughly $1.60, of it going to the Susan Komen foundation as an added bonus. (And in all fairness, New Balance does guarantee a minimum $500,000 donation, whether they sell 312,500 vest or other similarly priced items or not. Also, I love pink.)

Today’s run:

Speaking of 90-degree heat, the sun was brutal at 1 p.m. Thankfully, the forecast for Sunday (Rock’n’Roll day) is 70.
