I ♥ Running

Why do you run?

I get this question all the time. If you’re a runner, chances are you do, too.

The answer is simple: I run because I love it, of course! And because today is Valentine’s Day, let me shout it out:

I ♥ Running!

There are many reasons why, but these are my top ones… I think. (Don’t be surprised if I do at least five follow-ups on this with “just one more,” OK?)

1. First and foremost:

2. The pasta dinners before long runs

3. The post-race parties with bagels and coconut water — and sometimes chocolate and champagne!

4. The endorphin rush

5. The hour (or longer) that I get to myself and my favorite music

6. Coffee tastes SO much better at 5 a.m. on race day

7. The anticipation of lining up at the Start line

8. The happiness of crossing the Finish line

9. Perhaps indecently…

10. And last but not least, without my ♥ of running, I wouldn’t have this blog. And that would be a shame, wouldn’t it?

Why do you love running?

I love running. At times I think it’s my very best friend. I’ve been running for about 30 years. I’ve met great friends. I chat and catch up with the best of my friends while running. It makes my husband say, “she has great legs!” I’m a mom, a teacher, a wife, a daughter, a friend, but “I’m a runner is my absolute favorite,” I cannot run right now and I’m in Maui, 🙁 very sad . What’s a girl to do?
Thank you Aleks. I love your website!

Sorry to hear that you can’t run! I know how you feel exactly – the last time I was in Maui, I wasn’t allowed to run as well, because of an injury. I spent an hour+ a day on the elliptical or stationary bike at the gym, which felt like an insult to the amazing views and weather there. A couple of days before we had to head back, I couldn’t resist, though, and banged off 13 miles along the coast. If you’re not able to or allowed to run at all, at least you can enjoy swimming in the ocean or biking! The Haleakala Sunrise tours (see the sunrise, bike down to sea level from the top of Haleakala) are amazing. Enjoy!

It would be so sad if you weren’t doing this blog, or if it were focused on, I don’t know, competitive chess strategies. I had the good fortune to run with my sister this past weekend and in the midst of lots of family time, we got a nice hour to ourselves, which was sooooo nice. A bit of solitude, some mind-calming exercise and, yes, the pasta…it’s perfection!

That sounds wonderful! If I had a sister, I’d definitely love to run with her — as is, now I’m waiting for my kid to grow up a little more so we can do 5Ks together 🙂 Competitive chess… I don’t know, I think it’s a great blog idea!

I’ve only recently starting running in the past, almost two months. I love it because it gives me some me time and makes me feel awesome afterwards, I love the rush I get after I run,

^Yup, that’s endorphins you speak of 🙂 Hope you enjoy running even more as time goes on. Try a race or two – and you’ll get absolutely hooked!
