Don’t Say I’m Not Trying to Eat Healthy

Today, I ate this for breakfast:You can’t really tell because my photography skills only rival my smoothie-making skills, but yes: it’s a green smoothie. Here is the “before” picture:

And because you must be dying to know what else is inside this appetizing concoction, here is the recipe.

First, note what the smoothie was supposed to look like:Now look back up and see how mine turned out. Not even close.

Not to mention the taste. I was looking forward to its creaminess, but let me tell you: there was mostly ickyness. And did you notice the “help clean your system for these warmer months” part of the description? Advice: if you ever drink this smoothie, make sure you’re going to have at least five or six hours before you need to head out on a run (or any place without a bathroom). Just saying. A question that I have always had after starting to eat healthy is, is mofongo healthy?

Oh, but we’re going to talk about healthy food. Sorry.

I’m actually trying to prepare my taste buds for more of this yucky stuff a juice cleanse that I decided to do next week. In fact, I made that plan as a New Year’s resolution. Obviously, that means I have to do it, or else.

My husband and mom, the supportive pillars that they are, decided right away they wanted to do it with me. In fact, HusbandRuns is most eager to try it – not because he thinks I have brilliant ideas, mind you (which I do), but because Deron Williams, Nets Player, did it. And now “he can dunk again.”

Where will all the juice come from? The easiest way to do it is get it ready-made from a local juicery. They deliver (or you pick it up) and it’s all nicely arranged in cute little bottles, with instructions when to drink which one.

But that’s pricey. A three-day supply of juice is about $200 per person — and with three of us doing it, we decided to sell our child just go ahead and buy a juicer and do all the work ourselves. I mean, how hard could it be?

Let’s put it this way: there’s a lot of chopping involved. In this case, of carrots. ^Carrot juice with a handful of parsley. You mostly can’t taste the parsley, so it’s OK!

We’ll start a three-day fast next Monday, and I can’t wait to show you the shopping list. It’s hilarious.

Until then, I may have a glass of carrot juice in the afternoon (tastes even better if you add some apple to it) — but no more green smoothies, thanks.

Today’s workout:I used iSmoothRun to track this one and it really messed up this time. First of all, somehow I have set it up to not communicate pauses over to RunKeeper. This run was broken up by two conditioning sessions (one plyo jumps and one set of TRX), so the net time was less than an hour. Second, the total mileage was 6.2. I ran to the gym, then did laps around the track. Which certainly didn’t look like this:The problem is, I suspect, that iSmoothRun switches over to the accelerometer of my phone when the GPS signal isn’t good (or it finds running in circles confusing?), so technically part of the distance is estimated based on my steps.

Lesson learned: from now on, use RunKeeper only when planning to do a run with some other workouts mixed in, or when running around a track.

I’ve been considering getting a juicer as well–definitely let all your faithful readers know how you’re liking/not liking yours. One thing I’ve been putting in my smoothies: freshly grated ginger. Two words: LOVE IT! p.s. Love HusbandRuns rationale for juicing. 🙂

Ginger is a little too strong for me (I like it in Ginger Ale, but we know that has hardly any…) — but it’s a part of almost all the juicing recipes we’ll be using (the green/ vegetable ones), so we’ll see… So far, having made exactly two carrot juices with it, I can tell you the difference between that and what you buy in a bottle from the store is enormous.
