A Night for Mother Runners

I love meeting other mother runners. They just get it, you know? The whole running from our children as therapy thing, not to mention the little things — like why we excuse ourselves from the jumping jacks part of boot camp or buy bras with extra padding.

[And they wouldn’t even bat an eyelash at the above, which I realize full well others would consider TMI.]

So I could hardly pass up the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of mother runners for an evening — one featuring my favorite mother runner writers, no less. Yup, those ladies are Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea, co-authors of my favorite running books, Run Like a Mother and Train Like a Mother.

Like I’ve said a quadrillion times, if you want inspiration, honest advice and awesome training plans for any distance from 5K to a marathon, you must buy these books, like yesterday. I trained with the Half Marathon: Own It plan to a sub-2 hour PR last summer and continue to use the plans for marathon and half-marathon training.

Dimity and SBS hosted an AMR (Another Mother Runner) party at the Sports Basement Presidio yesterday, where they read from Train Like a Mother — and raffled out cool prizes (wait to see what I won!) — while several dozens of us sat comfortably on the carpet, having spilled enjoyed a glass or two of wine and some delicious cookies and cheese. I had a hoot hanging out with Cathryn and Angela. [Sorry about spilling your wine, Cathryn! You should know that I do this stuff all the time… Have fun at your camping-running adventure this weekend! And good luck, Angela, at the Ojai Marathon in a few weeks!] I also shopped a little, of course (you’ll see later), then chatted with Dimity about her upcoming Ironman. Well, mostly I told her how much I want to do one, as well. She probably gets this all the time. Dimity and me, and yes, I am that much shorter. Good luck with your Ironman, Dimity! You’ll rock it!

The evening was so much fun: great company, conversation, wine, raffle prizes and an awesome goodie bag! Inside:

I had heard of the legendary status of those AMR goodie bags, but seriously: is this one epic goodie bag or what? Dimity and SBS have more than a half-dozen more party dates set all around the country, so don’t wait or hesitate: find one near you right now and go Party Like a Mother Runner!

Today’s run:It’s been a while since I told you about my runs, hasn’t it? HusbandRuns graced me with his company today, for the second time in a row! He only had one condition: “No going six miles and up that hill again!”

Ha! That is referring to the other day, when I told him I found this “great little” hill on a bike ride a week ago, “really close” to our usual running route. Seriously, only a mile or so to get there and back, no more than four miles total

Well, let me tell you the law of biking vs running: distances appear to be a lot shorter on the bike! So this was our run the other day: ^The “little” hill. Not that it was that bad, really, it only goes to show how badly my gluteus needs some hill work.

Oh, wait: Sunday is Big Sur, which I’m running as part of a relay team — and my leg is uphill for the first two miles. There!

I don’t know yet about the 415, to be honest… It’s a long way to travel for me to run five miles (if it was a half marathon, I’d be there no question!) So I guess we’ll see 😉
