Weekend Adventures on Wheels

How was everyone’s weekend? Long — or not so much?

Please. Weekends are never long enough.

I spent a good chunk of Saturday and Sunday on two wheels. They were different sets of wheels, in fact – does that make ’em four?On Saturday, we went biking up a local destination: Bernall Hill in San Jose. I have said many times that San Jose is flat as a pancake… What was I talking about? If you live in the 408 and are in need of a little something-something that goes up 550 ft in under 1.5 miles, this is it. The view from the top is pretty amazing, of course. (It’s even better on the other side, where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of Silicon Valley. But I was too busy to take photos, what with squeezing the brakes on my way down – 25 mph seems to be my brain’s limit on the bike?)

Next time, I’m thinking two Bernal Hill loops, with a break on the second one for some photography.

Deal.

Then today: more biking! Except this time, I got an insane leg workout by cycling leisurely through Shoreline/ Stevens Creek trail (my favorite long run route!)Indeed, I biked slower than many people run. Check ’em out, those splits:Killer stuff.

And here’s the reason why. Make that two reasons:Mr. and Miss Cute-and-Blond(e) on their (play)date. Thirteen miles of pulling a solid 80 pounds of kids + whatever this trailer thing weighs, and let’s not forget the bike itself. Seriously, how big is that bike seat![Secret? Most comfortable thing ever. So soft, it’s like sitting on a sofa! Can I put one on my road bike??]

Oh, and note my super-technical biking gear: near shoulder-length drop earrings, Jackie O-style oversized glasses and flip flops. Perfect.

Double-checking everything… and realizing this bike has no brakes. No gears, either. Happy hills!
Oh but the conversations a five- and a four-year-old have when left alone for an hour-plus: priceless! It was like I saw those trails for the first time. The tunnels! The tree tunnels! The bridge tunnels. So much fun!

And because we all know the rule of running with a jogging stroller – double the miles for one kid; quadruple for two – can we all agree that I biked 40 miles today? OK then! 🙂

How was your weekend? Any fun miles or stories to share?

This might give you a laugh, I just started following a Half Marathon program and I logged on my phone to double check how many miles I needed-my damn iPhone screen is so small I clicked on marathon w/o realizing it! I only went 1 mile over what I really needed to do but geez when your out of shape gah! One mile feels like it will kill you!
