Big Sur Marathon: Who’s In?

So that must be a new record? Registration for the 2014 Big Sur International Marathon opened at 7 a.m. Pacific time today… and promptly sold out in 59 minutes!

Did you get in? I did! Phew!

Big Sur is on my marathon bucket list. I ran the better part of the course this year as a member of a relay team (I was supposed to do leg 3 – miles 10 to 17 – but just kept going after that until I crossed the finish line). It was so. beautiful. Just crazy. Clearly, running only 16.2 of 26.2 miles would not do.

So this morning, I had barely opened one eye and it hit me: Big Sur registration today! It was 7:08 and I was going to be late! I jumped off the bed, ran to the computer and quickly got down to business. Registered without a hitch. [Thank you, Active.com, for not crashing this time?!?]

Then the following conversation happened:

Me: I registered for Big Sur!
Husband: When was it?
Me: Sunday, April 27.
Husband: Well, register me too.
Me: Whaaaat? Husband: Well. I won’t be able to play soccer that day. Might as well.

Why not, indeed?

So I went back, registered him (not even three minutes later, mind you, and our bibs are 197 apart; that race must’ve been taking a hundred registrations a minute?) — and there you have it. Big Sur, here we come!By the way, if you’re reading this and are among the lucky ones who grabbed a spot in the 59-minute window, make sure to book a hotel ASAP. Those rooms are getting booked up nearly as fast!

Also: I am already registered for two races in 2014. It’s mid-July. Don’t tell me I’m the only one?

I am thinking about doing the Big Sur half and enjoyed your race recap of the relay; I look forward to reading about the full when you complete that SOON! The second photo down you posted is one of my favorite Big Sur spots with the little pool of water on the sand between the rock and land…almost makes me change my mind to doing the full so I can run by it…but I think I’ll stick to the half!
P.S. You’re not alone: I have completed 17 half marathons in the last 10 months. I look forward to hearing about more of your races!

Big Sur is so amazing, I can’t wait too! And I agree that the half marathon is the best distance – not too taxing on time/ body, but challenging enough to be fun and keep you in shape 🙂

I registered for Tink in Jan, Princess in Feb and now the big sur relay again in April!! 🙂 I wanted to do the full next year but I thought it might be too ambitious with the way my knee has been. I was talking to hubby and thought maybe I will just run the next leg up (and maybe all the way in?) every year :)) lol! Taking Leg 4 next year! I hope I am lucky enough to run with you again! Cant wait to do the tri in Oct! 🙂

“injury free” is the name of the game! Just FYI, the Tinker Bell Half has 12,000 people. It sold out in 3 days. So another 11,999 people have a race plan for 2014 too!!!!!

No!!! Your really not alone. I am registered for Tinker Bell Half Marathon in Jan. I am already starting my “run schedule”, I figured that I can just keep repeating the schedules to really prepare my body for this. My form sucks eggs and I want to work out the kinks before I try this race again. Last time I pulled a muscle in the side of my foot and I couldn’t walk around Disneyland to really celebrate my victory.
But many congrats on you both getting in!

Ha! OK, that does make me feel a little better 🙂 Good luck at Tinker Bell! Hopefully you’ll conquer it injury-free this time 🙂
