The PomePlantPower Smoothie

Maybe that’s not a very successful name for a killer-delicious-rejuvenating smoothie? I just made it up. It has all these amazing ingredients:So a couple of weeks ago, the folks at Zola sent me two Zola juice samples – Zola Acai Pomegranate and Zola Acai Blueberry – with the challenge to think of fun and creative recipes to use them.

Of course, being fun and creative with a juice means coming up with anything but a smoothie. Juice. Smoothie. Obvious.

But come on. What better pre- or post-workout fuel is there than a power smoothie?

And I needed that power smoothie badly. Taking an easy day after Sunday’s 10K race through the Mother Nature’s fury wasn’t an option, with a 2500-yard swim and 45-minute ride on the calendar. And the next day – today – I had a one-hour ride + 30-min run brick. Massively nutritious fuel was needed!

So I whipped up the following:

  • 1 bottle (12 oz) of Zola Acai Pomegranate juice
  • 1 cup frozen spinach (fresh would also work, but then you’d need ice, which would dilute the drink, so pre-freeze Zola juice in an ice tray instead.)
  • 1 scoop Amazing Meal Pomegranate Mango Infusion (protein/ plant and fruit extract powder – excellent stuff!)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp sunflower butter (can substitute with any nut butter, sun’s my favorite)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

Blend until smooth:It tastes amazing – and no, you can’t taste the spinach at all, but I’m sure you already knew that!

Nailed the workout, too: 19.1 miles in 1:05 on the bike, followed by 3.2 very easy miles in 30 minutes. Done! And thanks for the vitamins, PomePlantPower Smoothie!

Looks good Aleks. Is there added sugar in the juice? I love the sun butter without added sugar too, have you tried that one? As you see I’m trying to cut back , to leave room for chocolate. 🙂

Hm…. didn’t even think to check the bottle! Here’s the ingredient list: Organic Açaí Juice (Filtered Water, Organic Açaí Puree), Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Pomegranate Juice (Filtered Water, Organic Pomegranate Juice Concentrate), Citric Acid, Natural Flavors.

So yes, organic evaporated cane juice ain’t nothing but sugar 🙂 You can always make smoothies with unsweetened almond milk or fresh-squeezed juices, too 🙂
