Chill Out with a Berry-Almond-Chia Smoothie

Forgive me for using the world’s most boring conversation opener, but is it dang hot out there or what?!? These past two days have been a total sweatfest, and all I’ve been doing is sit on my butt.

It was even hot and humid in San Francisco yesterday! In June!! What??

So basically, I’ve been moping around the house, feeling very lucky that I don’t have to run a lot this week (supposedly tapering, right?)

The thought of going for an easy ride crossed my mind today, but after considering it for three seconds exactly, I decided to stay indoors and make myself a nice chilly smoothie instead.

It was delicious! Here’s how I made it:

1. Put a cup and a half (or two) of your favorite frozen berries in your blender. I like blueberries and strawberries; not so much raspberries because they have those little seeds that get stuck in my teeth:2. Add some chia seeds (to taste) and almond milk, enough to cover the frozen fruit:3. Blend. If you have a cheap old blender like mine, this may take a while.

4. After a few minutes of not very successful blending, add some more almond milk – and throw in some chocolate-flavor protein powder.5. Serve and enjoy. I ate mine with a spoon, it was so thick and ice-creamy. (That last-minute decision to add chocolate protein powder was an act of pure genius. Just sayin’!)Normally, I add a lot of stuff in my smoothies: almond or sunflower seed butter; fruit juice, more kinds of fruit… but with the temperatures so high, I figured something simple – and cold! – would do the trick.

And so it did!

In a couple of hours, I’m off to the swimming pool for a late-evening workout. Take that, California heat wave!

How do you handle the heat? Do you eat different foods? Work out as planned or reschedule?
